Attention Parents, Guardians, and Students:

On Thursday, March 26, 2020, Alabama Governor Kay Ivey held a press conference in response to the COVID-19 pandemic that is encompassing the United States. In this press conference, Governor Ivey along with Alabama State Department of Education Superintendent Dr. Eric Mackey announced that all schools will be closed for the remainder of the 2019-2020 school year. Unfortunately, this virus has created a situation where it is not feasible to safely return to school this year. All athletic events, field trips, and any other occasions are currently cancelled as well.

The Leadership Team of Tuscumbia City Schools takes this news very seriously and has already held a conference call to determine how we will proceed with the future learning of all of our students for the remainder of this school year. At the moment, beginning on April 6, 2020 each student will have educational lessons on either Edmentum, Google Classroom, or traditional paper and pencil assignment packets. We are working on a plan now to create and develop video lessons for you to access with your children. Again, this will be new material that will be in place of your child attending school. These assignments will be graded and this will determine your child’s report card grades for the last nine weeks along with yearly grades.

While this is not what we nor you understand education to be, it is our current future. We will attempt to overcome every obstacle to ensure that your child receives a quality education. As we attempt to understand and develop our future plans, please be watchful for a survey that will be sent to each of you in regards to the different technology devices that you currently have access to along with the ability to use the internet. This survey will help guide the development of our plan as we move forward.

Thank you for all you do for your children and for Tuscumbia City Schools. As we navigate our future, we need your help and support. These are very trying times for many of our stakeholders. Please remember to follow the recommendations of the Center for Disease Control and maintain social distancing, washing of hands and general hygiene, and stay home unless you need or have to go out. Everyone working together will help us get back to our normal lives quicker. Please check our website and all social media outlets for future messages.

Working for the children of Tuscumbia and our teachers daily,

Darryl Aikerson

Superintendent of Tuscumbia City Schools

****Due to technical difficulties, we are suspending kindergarten registration at the moment.  We will call out to all of our current families when we are able to open the portal.  If you are a new parent, please look back on our website beginning March 30, 2020.  We are sorry for any difficulties associated with this unforeseen issue.

We would like to pass along information that we have received from Helen Keller Hospital.

COVID-19 “Coronavirus”

What to do if you suspect you have COVID-19

As always if you are experiencing a medical emergency, call 9-1-1.

If you are concerned about COVID-19, call your primary care physician or health care provider and tell them about your symptoms and exposure. They will decide whether you need to be tested, but keep in mind that there is no treatment for COVID-19 and people who are mildly ill may be able to isolate and care for themselves at home. Should your physician decide you need to be tested, they will need to call ahead and notify the hospital. You will also be asked to wear a mask upon entering the building.

The following symptoms may appear 2-14 days after exposure:

·         Cough

·         Fever

·         Difficulty breathing

Our hospitals do not test for COVID-19. We only collect samples from the persons who meet the criteria as determined by the Alabama Department of Public Health. The samples are then sent to the Alabama Department of Public Health.

Take steps to protect yourself:

·         Wash your hands

·         Avoid touching eyes, nose and mouth

·         Cover coughs and sneezes

·         Clean and disinfect

·         Stay home if you feel sick- except to seek medical care

·         Avoid close contact with other people- the COVID-19 virus spreads through droplets. Stay 6 feet away from people and only go into public when necessary
