First Grade Readiness
The Alabama First Grade Readiness Act, officially HB113, requires students to demonstrate first-grade readiness through a readiness assessment before entering first grade if they have not completed kindergarten. This assessment, developed by the Alabama State Department of Education, will measure crucial developmental and physical skills necessary for first grade. The first assessment will be administered in the 2025-2026 school year. The act aims to bridge early educational gaps and ensure students are adequately prepared for first grade. The Alabama State Department of Education will use Alabama Early Learning Inventory or AL-ELI to evaluate first grade readiness.
