Alabama Literacy Act
Program Overview
The Alabama Literacy Act, enacted into law in June of 2019, requires all students in the 3rd grade to be proficient at grade level in reading. A student’s ability to read at grade levels is crucial to their success in future grades and subjects. The Alabama Legislature passed the Alabama Literacy Act in an effort to ensure students improve their reading proficiency. All public schools in the state of Alabama must ensure that a comprehensive effort to improve foundational reading skills are taught to ensure students read at or above grade level by the end of third grade using the Alabama Comprehensive Assessment Program (ACAP) Reading score for the student.
